STUDENT COUNCIL
This year the student council has two major goals. One is a Community Goal and the other an Environmental Goal. The Community Goal is to promote the culture of the school. We are going to achieve this by putting a wall at the front of our school to inform people that this is Freshwater State School. Throughout the year we have fundraisers for the Red Cross and Shave for a Cure; we participate in the Anzac Day March. By doing these activities we hope to promote the culture of the school.
Our Environmental Goal is to keep educating the school about being environmentally friendly. This means that Freshwater S. S. will be using less electricity and water. We are going to make this possible by using energy efficient products like Energy Saving Light Bulbs, Solar Panels, Water Tanks and Aqua Clicks. Hopefully this will save water and electricity. These will all benefit the future of our planet.
STUDENT LEADER'S REPORT
Along with other leaders of schools in Cairns, the Captains and Vice-Captains of Freshwater State School attended the 2008 Leadership Camp, at the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre, on the 13 th and 14 th March. Throughout these two days, we were involved in activities such as Goal Setting, High Ropes, Public Speaking, Qualities of a Leader, Initiative tasks, cooking, and getting to know each other.
On the first day, we were very fortunate to have Mr Marc Harbrow come and talk to us about his life and how it has changed after his battle with leukaemia. He talked to us about setting goals, having a dream, and having the right attitude to reach that dream. The donation of bone marrow by his brother Jarrod saved his life and now Marc lives every day to the fullest and makes every post a winner.
We were all up bright and early on the second day for a run on the beach, which was fun, but after a late night we were all pretty tired!
After breakfast we had some time to complete our action plans, and set goals for the year. We then had lots of fun with an initiative task to finish off the day- I’m sure everyone enjoyed this. After lunch we all sat round in a circle and reflected and evaluated the camp.
The most important thing we learnt was that time management is vital to successfully completing tasks on time and saying we are too busy is NOT an excuse. All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and a VERY worthwhile camp!
